Take on me, ooooo aaaah

Well, my pretties, it feels good. I was getting ready to upload some code to investigate the random instant deaths occuring in the open beta, and I got it into my head to add the “/takelead” command.

It’s been in for a while but, between you and I, it would have been abused by the smacktards, ya know, /takelead’ing off anyone they wanted to annoy.

Right now there is a concept of “defacto leader” – when this guy loses his mission, he gets to take it back whenever he likes within a 6 minute period. After the 6 minutes are up, the then leader becomes the new defacto leader and gets the same 6-min window if he gets usurped.

Also, to prevent weenie leader-grabbing, I assigned grace periods to a bunch of activities — posting /orders, assigning a backup leader, posting/affirming waypoints and contact reports, becoming leader… But I also made going AFK bite into those. The longer you have yourself marked as AFK the less grace you get.

The one thing I didn’t do – undecided on this – is make it so that you can’t /takelead from someone who is /ignoring you. It was the only mechanism I could think of to keep someone from harrasing you with it. Oh, I know you want a /kick type command, but that’s not gonna happen ;)

any chance for secondary leaders? IE you have the mission leader but that means only one person is being spammed by reports. since it seems auto accepting reports is a bad thing any chance to break up the tedium?

We have a number of squad members that are in OKW that set themselves AFK during squad night so that they won’t be bothered as much. Would this then prevent them from leading missions during that time?

automatically being put on AFK by the system (not designating yourself such), should allow an immediate “takelead”. imho. :)

mpathy: it would allow anyone who wanted to /takelead from them to do so. They have 6 minutes to retake it.

Backup mission leader probably not going to fly past gophur for the same reason we can’t convince him to allow auto-approval.

So before the 6 minutes is up, can someone take the lead from the “not yet defacto leader”, or can /takelead only be done once per 6 minutes?

T+0m defacto leader is kfs1:
T+0m bloo /takeleads
T+2m doc /takeleads
T+4m gophur /takeleads
T+4m gophur gets 5 minutes grace for “/orders crap!”
T+5m kfs1 /takeleads and gets it back unconditionally (still defacto)

or

T+0m defacto is kfs1
T+0m bloo /takeleads
T+5m doc /takeleads
T+6m doc becomes defacto leader
T+6m doc issues “/orders please me” and gets 5 minutes grace
T+6m kfs1 types /takelead and is told he has to wait 5 minutes (doc is defacto leader)
T+11m kfs1 types /takelead and gets leader
T+11 to T+17 if doc types /takelead, gets leader back
else
T+17 kfs1 gets defacto again

Hmmm…..I am not too sure about that KFS. you can still get a some weenies harrassing you. repeatedly…..

could you make it so that if someone /takelead and the leader takes it back there is like a 10 min wait until you can /takelead again?

I see your firs scenario going in circles ad infinitum with some … and while they are busy harassing each other the rest of us get pissed and everyone starts /takeleading…..

And what the hell is Gophur’s deal? No back-up leaders? That make absolutely perfect sense…as any platoon or squad would have a leader and a second….that’s basic military doctrine……he really needs to get his head out of his 4th point of contact……sheesh….

Hmm, I guess I misunderstood. I thought the leader would have to be idle (ML idle, not generally idle) for a certain amount of time before anyone could grab the leader slot from them. As listed it does look somewhat grief-prone.

Yeah, it sounds like once someone takeleads, it will lead to a freeforall as people try to spike and take the lead right as 6 minutes passes so they will become the defacto leader… Kinda like people putting in ebay bids the last second so noone has time to respond.

(Incidentally, I tried to takelead from my second account yesterday, and it said “Can’t take lead for another 927210 days”… or some similarily large number. That’s a pretty long wait…. ;-)

2 things off the bat (not that are only 2 things):

A) All this worry about people competing to take mission leader. Silliness. Most of the time, people GIVE AWAY ML if the opportunity presents itself. If someone wants to be ML that bad, they can just make their own mission in most cases anyway.

B) Definitely need a timer on attempts to stop arseholes from spamming it at people just to annoy them.

…@/

Erh, he does have to be idle. My example assumes he is out of any kind of grace period. When the defactor retakes control he can /orders straight away to give himself a 10 minute grace period.

Ah. The times are relative to him hitting the idle limit then. Gotcha. I was reading it as T+0m from mission start.

Maybe to help with the griefing you should make it so that a new leader would potentialy need to get a vote or 2 from other people on the mission in order to take the lead. Even From the current leader. That way other people on the mission have a bit of the say. Even just having one person /votelead kfs1 or something. this would mean more work for you if you want to take the lead but I would imagine in order to lead you better have some kind of communication with the people on your team.

I think a UI for everyone on your mission would be very nice. Maybe just on the map screen where you can right click to nominate people to take lead and set people to different levels of leadership.

you know make it so that another person on the mission is responsible to accept contact reports or, have it so that another pserson is also able to set way points.. just ideas.

“Erh, he does have to be idle. My example assumes he is out of any kind of grace period. When the defactor retakes control he can /orders straight away to give himself a 10 minute grace period.”

Gottcha. Looks great and a long time overdue.

PS tell DOC to relax and drink some Camomile Tea. He was a bit testy in the Hangar yesterday……well I was a bit to blame …..

WOOT! I read the readme on the the 1,27 update and saw that you have the ability to assign an backup leader. Will they be able to accept reports?
